Unexpected Harmony

Tenney arrives at Monday’s after-school rehearsal with her stomach in knots. She’s spent the weekend reworking “Where You Are” around Logan’s drum track and still doesn’t know how he’ll take the changes she wants to make. Walking into the studio, she finds him already warming up at his kit, and watching him, she realizes for the first time how much coordination drumming takes.

Logan notices her and stops, out of breath. Tenney asks if Portia’s around yet, hoping to talk to him alone first. He explains that Portia just stepped out for water, and that Zane and Ellie are coming by once the session wraps.

Nerves prickling, Tenney tells Logan she got his texts, spent real time with his drum track, and admits his rhythm works for her song. For a second, Logan looks pleased, like a little kid, before catching himself and needling her about admitting she was wrong. Irritated, Tenney bites back a sharp reply, and the two sit in awkward silence until Portia returns.

Portia puts her hands on Tenney’s shoulders and asks how she’s feeling. Tenney’s cheeks redden as she remembers her freak-out the other night. She admits the weekend was productive, the song sounds stronger now at a faster tempo. Tenney then tells Logan she likes his backbeat, but the bridge’s tempo and melody changes feel predictable. Logan frowns, but she plays his version back, then strums a new riff of her own. Portia likes it, calling it similar to Logan’s take but more unexpected. Logan asks what else Tenney has, so she brings up the ending, worried it feels abrupt next to the soft close she originally wrote, and plays an alternative.

Portia spins her turquoise ring, considering, then takes Tenney’s guitar and offers a bigger idea: repeat the last line of the verse melody, then launch into a chorus riff that builds before snapping to a stop. Tenney claps, delighted. Logan declares the song is going to rock, and Portia answers that it already does, handing Tenney’s guitar back and grabbing a spare acoustic off the wall.

From there, the three work through the whole song measure by measure, some ideas clicking right away, others taking longer. Tenney is surprised to find she’s actually having fun working with Logan. By the time they finish and take a water break, Zane and Ellie have arrived. Zane tips back his hat, surveys the room, and remarks that they’ve clearly found their groove. He asks to hear what they’ve got, so they play the new version start to finish.

It barely resembles what Tenney first wrote, but she loves playing it. The lyrics still say what she means, and the melody is a fuller version of what she’d first dreamed up at school. By the end of a boot-stomping run-through, Ellie is whooping and Zane grins ear to ear. “Now that’s the song it was meant to be,” he declares, patting Tenney on the back.

Tenney tells Ellie she loves it, especially the new ending. Logan agrees, wondering why he hadn’t thought of it himself, and winks at Portia. Portia just smiles, sure one of them would have landed on it eventually. Zane folds his arms, satisfied. “I knew you two would make a great team.”

Logan and Tenney trade a knowing look. Working together hasn’t been easy, but somewhere in all that friction, they’ve built a great song. For the first time, Tenney is genuinely glad Zane introduced her to Logan Everett.
