Duet for One

Sitting at the lunch table, Tenney tells Jaya and Holliday that Logan quit. Jaya can’t believe it. She says that Logan treated Tenney badly; she doesn’t blame her if Tenney never wanted to play with Logan again. Holliday thoughtfully says that when people are upset or feel bad, sometimes that comes out as anger. Maybe after Tenney gives it some time, she will be more understanding of Logan’s point of view.

After school, Tenney heads downtown to meet Zane and Ellie at Mockingbird Records. Zane confirms that Logan quit. But the good news is that they’re working on drafting a new solo contract up for Tenney so she can continue working. Unfortunately, Tenney won’t be able to open for Belle Starr—she just doesn’t have enough time to develop a full solo set.

Even though this is all of Tenney’s dreams come true, something still feels missing, and Tenney feels horrible for Logan.

At Dad’s shop, Tenney knew she had to face the uncomfortable feeling of playing their music alone. As she started, she realized how much of their music had developed into a duet act… even though it could be played solo, it just felt lonely without Logan’s drums and energy.

Just three measures into “The Nerve” she stops herself. She just can’t play this duet alone. Instead, a new melody came into her head. She strummed it out, and soon rough lyrics followed.
