Tenney Shares the Stage

The Gathering Place

Tenney wakes with a jolt, as if someone smashed a gong beside her ear. By breakfast, she feels like a fragile, jittery bird ready to take flight. She forces down oatmeal, dresses in a denim vest over a pink t-shirt, and does her own hair in a low side ponytail since Aubrey has claimed Mom for a nervous braid. She checks her guitar case for extra strings and her favorite capo, then catches Aubrey nervously chewing her cheek, a look Tenney recognizes from her own first show.

Outside, Mason and Dad load mic stands and cables into the truck while Mom climbs in clutching Aubrey’s accordion. Dad kisses Tenney’s cheek and tells her she doesn’t look nervous. She admits she is, dreading the moment her parents and Logan end up in the same room.

At the hospital, they park, unload the equipment, and ride the elevator up, where Nurse Jim greets them with a grin, glad for the good timing. Tenney introduces everyone and follows him to the Gathering Place.

Inside, chairs and couches sit in rows around a cleared space up front, and a banner reading “WELCOME, TENNEY & LOGAN!” hangs from the ceiling in hand-painted, glittery letters. The room holds only one person: Logan, tuning Alice’s guitar beneath it.

Aubrey shrieks and darts through the chairs to hug him. Mom and Dad freeze, startled, since Tenney never told them he’d be there. Logan just waves back, unaware of what she’s hidden. Nurse Jim explains that Alice talks about them nonstop, that the kids painted the banner, and that anything lifting patients’ spirits matters. Mom starts to apologize, but Mason interrupts, praising the surprise as fantastic. Dad presses her about the solo acoustic set she’d promised, and she corrects him gently: she’ll be playing acoustic, just not alone. Aubrey, oblivious to the tension, drags Logan over to gush about playing together again.

Then Portia pokes her head in with Zane and Ellie trailing behind. Everyone seems to register everyone else at once. Logan’s jaw drops, Portia laughs in surprise, and Zane squints, demanding to know what’s going on. Moments later, Mrs. Everett and Jude arrive, too, already in on the secret. Tenney climbs onto a chair and waves her arms until the noise dies down, then announces an apology for keeping everyone in the dark, since it was the only way to get them all in one room.

Tenney tells her parents Logan is as much a part of her music as she is, and reminds them they once said she could jam with him sometime. She tells Mrs. Everett that music is what makes Logan happy while everything else stresses him out. She tells Portia she was right about needing to trust him, and that she can’t imagine not sharing her songs with him. Finally, facing Logan, she admits she knew he’d never have agreed to perform if he thought she was pushing him to reconsider quitting.

Logan admits she’s right, then goes quiet when she asks if he’ll play anyway, his eyes guarded. Tenney sinks into a chair, drained, sure that everyone in the room is angry with her. Mason breaks the silence, reminding their parents the concert is for a good cause, mild deception aside. Dad cracks a reluctant smile. Portia adds she wouldn’t want their secret planning to go to waste. Zane agrees, and Mrs. Everett agrees, too, wiping away a tear.

Logan asks what happens now, then answers it himself with a half-smile, suggesting they just warm up, so Tenney hugs him instead.

Soon, Jaya and Holliday arrive in homemade Tenney and Logan t-shirts to help wrangle the kids. Mason and Dad finish the sound equipment, and Mom and Mrs. Everett chat with Zane, Ellie, and Portia. A nurse guides Alice to the front-row seat Logan saved her, and she brightens at the sight of them.

Kids stream in next, some as young as five and some clearly teenagers, in hospital gowns or pajama bottoms and slippers, filling the rows until there’s no question the show is happening, ready or not.
