Honestly, Cécile is one of my favorite Girls of Many Lands characters. The doll is adequate. The dress is pretty, the hair is fragile, and honestly the dolls makeup is a little creepy. But I love this book. There is no part of the character that seems immature or bothersome. The story is intriguing and has depth. In fact, it was based on real events and real people from the 1700s! I would consider Cécile’s book a must-read, and the bonus points from the beautiful story and inside cover artwork makes up for the doll’s creepy face.

Twelve-year-old Cécile lives in France in the early 1700s. After losing her mother just a year before, she is surprised when her father jumps at the opportunity to get her a position at court, even if it means they’d be separated forever. Cécile is kindhearted, generous, and caring. She is well-educated, since she can read and write French. Although she finds it difficult to adjust to life at court, she stands up for what she believes in when it really counts, despite the possibility of consequences.
