Jess Akiko McConnell is an energetic, adventurous girl and the youngest in a family of archaeologists. When her parents head to Belize for a dig, Jess comes along, trading her usual routine for a few months of homeschooling in the rainforest. Though she isn’t especially interested in the digging itself, she loves imagining the lives of the ancient Maya and throws herself into exploring her surroundings. She studies guitar, is crazy about soccer, and dreams of maybe playing professionally one day. In Belize she befriends a local girl named Sarita, fosters a baby parrot named Pippi, and stumbles onto a hidden historical treasure.
