Addy Walker is an African American girl who begins her story enslaved with her family on a North Carolina plantation during the last years of the Civil War. In the fall of 1864, she and her mother, Ruth, make a harrowing escape to freedom in the North, settling in Philadelphia, but the family is torn apart along the way, with her father and older brother sold off and her baby sister left behind. Addy spends much of her series aching to see her whole family reunited in freedom, holding onto that hope as she builds a new life. Brave, loving, and thoughtful, she often risks her own safety for the sake of others, though she can be shy in the big city and around people she’s just met. She’s remarkably intelligent and thrives once she starts school, learning to read and write within months, winning a spelling bee, and dreaming of becoming a teacher. Generous with what she learns, Addy teaches her own family to read and write, carrying a deep family pride and a heart full of hope through even the hardest times.

When BeForever was introduced in 2014, they turned Addy’s six Central Series stories into two books: Finding Freedom: An Addy Classic Volume 1 and A Heart Full of Hope: An Addy Classic Volume 2. The first volume included modified versions of the first three stories of the Central Series, and the second volume included modified versions of the last three stories. In addition, they released a special choose-your-own-adventure book, A New Beginning: My Journey with Addy.

When BeForever ended in 2019, they repackaged the stories again into two books: Finding Freedom and A Heart Full of Hope.
