Claudie Wells is a nine-year-old African American girl growing up in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. She’s the older of two children, and her family lives in a lively boarding house run by Miss Amelia, where she’s surrounded by artists and musicians. Her parents came north from the South as part of the Great Migration, and her grandmother still tends the family farm back in Georgia. Claudie worries that, unlike everyone around her, she wasn’t born with a special talent: her father is a gifted baker, her mother a news reporter, and her best friend Nina a wonderful dancer, while Claudie feels she can’t quite keep up whether she tries dancing, singing, painting, or baking. What she doesn’t yet see is that she has gifts of her own—delighting her little brother Jody with hand-puppet shows and spinning stories that hold everyone’s attention. Over time, she comes to realize she is a natural storyteller, discovering that her talent was there all along.
