Courtney Moore lives in the fictional city of Orange Valley, California, with her blended family, growing up in the neon-bright world of the mid-1980s. An avid gamer, she holds one of the highest Pac-Man scores at Smiley’s Arcade and dreams of designing her own video game starring a heroine of her own invention, Crystal Starshooter. She loves Star Wars, The Goonies, and the color purple, and she’s endlessly fascinated by space—especially the upcoming launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger and its schoolteacher astronaut. Courtney likes to feel in control, which isn’t easy amid all the changes in her life: her mother running for mayor, her father moving away, and her once-close stepsister Tina suddenly pushing her aside. She can be shy around people she doesn’t know and slow to speak up for herself, but her best friend Sarah says that when Courtney does talk, she always knows exactly what to say. Imaginative, artistic, and quietly determined, she looks up to strong women as role models and wishes the world had more heroines like the ones she dreams up.
