The whole world whirls until it finally stops and I am back in Grandma’s shop. I help her make dinner, and we eat and clean up while we wait for Dad to come home. When I hear a door slam below and his footsteps coming up the steps, I rush to meet him and wrap my arms around his neck.

I can’t explain what happened to me this afternoon, and I can’t even find the words to apologize to him for getting so mad at him and his rules. All I know right now is that my dad will never, ever leave me in a foundling home. He’ll never sign a contract that says I have to work for strangers for years on end.

When he asks if everything is all right, I simply answer that everything is great.
