Isabel Hoffman is a nine-going-on-ten-year-old girl living in Seattle just before the turn of the millennium. Six minutes younger than her fraternal twin Nicki—but an inch taller—she is all glitter to her sister’s grunge, loving pink, pop music, sparkles, and anything bright and bouncy. A devoted Spice Girls fan, she’s been making up dances with her friends since second grade and can’t wait to perform at Seattle’s big Millennium Celebration. Outgoing, excitable, and famously bad at whispering, she talks all through movies and never turns down a triple-dog-dare, though she’s messy, scattered, and scared of heights. Isabel leans on the idea of “twintuition” to insist that she and Nicki should do everything together, and she can be headstrong when things don’t go the way she assumes they will. Still, she loves her sister fiercely and always knows when something is troubling her.
Nicki Hoffman is Isabel’s fraternal twin—six minutes older, an inch shorter, and the grunge to Isabel’s glitter. She prefers denim, flannel, and sneakers, loves ska, rock, and skateboarding, and gravitates toward purple and black, sour candy, and bands like No Doubt. Shyer and more reserved than her sister, she starts out with no friends but Isabel, until she works up the courage to join a group of skaters at the park and befriends Ari. Organized and thoughtful, she loves bookstores, writes her own song lyrics and zines, and chews her pens when she’s worried—especially about the looming Y2K bug. More than anything, Nicki longs to be seen as her own person rather than just one half of a matched set, even as she bristles when others suggest she and Isabel aren’t “twin enough.” She adopts a puppy named Blossom and slowly learns to share the parts of herself she once kept hidden.
