And then I realize that home is right in front of me. It’s where my family is. But maybe I had to lose them, temporarily, before I could realize how much they meant to me. I climb off the rock. The afternoon sun touches the adobe house with a warm, golden light. I never thought this funny, flat-roofed house could look so welcoming.

I pull open the door and Daisy pushes in ahead of me. My family’s faces turn toward me, familiar and smiling. Mom comes over to give me a hug. I lean against the counter. Dad goes to check on the tamales on the stove. They smell delicious.

I head over to the cabinet and pull out some plates. It’s time for my first dinner in my new home.
