Just then, Mrs. Kittredge comes into the kitchen. She raises her eyebrows when she sees how wet we are, but she smiles when she sees the washed dishes and the scrubbed kitchen counters and floor. She thanks us. I add that Kit didn’t want me to help, but I insisted. Mrs. Kittredge says that explains why we’re both wet. But I need some dry clothes.

Kit says that we can go to Uncle Hendrick’s house to pick up my suitcase. Mrs. Kittredge nods, gives us a smile, and leaves the room. Yikes! I don’t want to go to Uncle Hendrick’s house. If he’s ever met this Lucille person, he’ll know I’m not her. And then what will I tell everyone?
