Full Speed Ahead: My Journey with Kit
Cincinnati, OH – 1933Before I know it, I am back in my room, everything as it was before I left. But I’m different. I know now how sweet it is to have a pet to love, and my heart aches without Kit and Buddy. I wander into the living room, where my babysitter, Sophie, sits on the couch. I wave, and she pulls off her earphones.
I sit down and say hello. The people Kit and I met were friendly despite our scruffy looks. Maybe I judged Sophie too fast, and it’s me who’s been ignoring her.
I ask Sophie if she has any pets, and she breaks into a smile a mile wide. She has a rescue dog, little and shy, named Braveheart to build up his confidence.
I ask if, when Mom says it’s okay, Sophie could bring Braveheart over on her next sitting day. She would love that, and so would Braveheart. Suddenly I feel excited to get to know Sophie. Kit taught me to make the best of a situation. I might not have my own dog, but I can play with hers, and I have a feeling that will be fun, too.
