Rebecca Rubin
New York City, NY – 1914Rebecca Rubin is a lively, dramatic girl growing up in a Russian-Jewish immigrant family in New York City in the early 1910s. The second-youngest of five children, she often longs to stand out and be the center of attention, feeling overlooked between her twin older sisters, her studious brother, and the baby of the family. She dreams of becoming an actress, like her cousin, and adores the movies, even though her family thinks acting is less than respectable and hopes she’ll become a teacher instead. Rebecca acts out plays with her wooden dolls, crochets beautifully without ever needing a pattern, and has a real knack for business and numbers, earning the nickname “math whiz” from her grandfather. Warm, generous, and courageous, she loves to make people laugh, though she can be bossy when directing her productions and wants things to go her way. Throughout her stories, Rebecca navigates the balance between fitting into mainstream American life and holding tight to her family’s Jewish faith and Russian heritage.
