Makena Williams
Washington D.C. – 20219/10
Makena is a character that speaks up against injustice in her community and urges everybody to see people for who they are. I especially loved how American Girl managed to address these tricky subjects in a way that’s comfortable for kids. In addition, I think this doll is so cute! However, I heard a couple comments that this doll looks very young. I think the reason is that her face mold (the new Makena face mold), gives her really big eyes and a round face and forehead (which isn’t helped by her hair being pulled back away from covering any part of her face), which sort of makes her look like a young child. I suppose that’s why I wrote “this doll is cute,” and not “this doll is elegant.” Ultimately, I docked one point for her youthful features on a character that’s supposed to be thirteen.

But when Makena experiences racial injustice in her own neighborhood, she decides to post more than her OOTD (outfit of the day)—she figures out how to use fashion to speak up about injustice.
