A New Beginning: My Journey with Addy
Philadelphia, PA – 1864My feet carry me straight to the rag bin, and almost before I decide to do it, I let the square fall from my fingers. It lands softly among the scraps, swallowed up by the pile.
I am still standing there when Addy comes hurrying back across the hall, cheeks pink from rushing. She glances at my empty hands, then at the table where my needle and thread sit abandoned, and asks where my square went. I admit I threw it in the rag bin.
Addy frowns and asks if I meant to throw it away. I nod. It wasn’t good enough to add to the quilt. She looks disappointed. Then she shakes her head and tells me it’s her fault for not giving me a choice about how to help today.
We can do something else that I’ll find more enjoyable. Addy glances around the busy hall, then asks if I’d rather join the decorating committee, or head to the kitchen to help make cookies for the benefit instead.
