Molly McIntire & Emily Bennett
Jefferson, IL – 1944Molly McIntire comes from a Scottish-American family, living in the fictional town of Jefferson, Illinois. She is constantly scheming and planning ways to draw attention to herself. Her ideas are oftentimes unrealistic, and she is prone to daydreaming and fanciful ideas. Most of the time, World War II is a distant inconvenience in her daily life, but throughout her series, she gains compassion and understanding for the people whose lives are greatly affected by the war. She struggles with mathematics and is afraid of swimming underwater, and is self-conscious about her looks, particularly, her hair.
Emily Bennett is a quiet and shy, but sweet girl from London. She’s an only child, and comes to stay with Molly’s family while her Aunt Primrose, who she was supposed to stay with, recovers from pneumonia. World War II has affected her greatly, including bombing, stricter and longer rations, and more immediate dangers. Her father is a doctor. He’s been drafted into the British military, unlike Molly’s father, who voluntarily signed himself up to serve. Emily doesn’t like being made fun of or embarrassed, and is sometimes disturbed by the overall loudness and direct attitudes of the McIntire children.
