I’ve already gotten myself into a pickle letting them think I’m someone I’m not. I don’t want to make things worse by making up a theater that doesn’t exist. So I honestly say the only theater in New York where I’ve performed is the Band Box.

Sadie says it must be off Broadway. I nod in agreement. Way, way off Broadway, I think to myself.

I steal a glance at Rebecca, wondering if she can tell how far I’ve stretched the truth. Can she guess I haven’t done any vaudeville acts at all? Thankfully, the twins have already moved on to talking about movies, so I’m off the hook—at least for now.
