Chances and Changes: My Journey with Molly
Jefferson, IL – 1945But it’s a risk I have to take. I tell them that I lost something very precious and had to find it before we could go on. Molly and Linda insisted on staying with me. Molly says they tried to follow the first rule of hiking. We stuck together.
Miss Butternut nods and comments that it seems we remembered that rule after we got separated from our hiking group. She sighs. She’s disappointed in us. I feel Molly and Linda’s shoulders sag. They feel as badly about disappointing Miss Butternut as I feel about disappointing Gem and Bea. And I feel terrible that I am the cause of everything.
Miss Butternut continues to say that she is impressed with our cooperation, sound decision-making, and the responsible leadership we showed in a difficult situation. Molly looks up. She won’t be sending us all home? Miss Butternut smiles and says no, this is Camp Gowonagin after all. We learn from our mistakes and go on and try again. Miss Archer and Betty smile, too. Molly, Linda, and I sigh with relief and hug each other. I am so glad that everything worked out that I feel like cheering.
